02.12.2021 Christmas Cheer at Castle Square!
On Saturday 27 November, the Elephant and Castle Town Centre team held the Christmas light switch on event in Castle Square. The Mayor of Southwark came along and following a countdown from the crowd he switched on the lights and officially kicked off the community’s Christmas festivities.
Castle Square created two free instagrammable grottos complete with Santa and his helpful elf, so visitors could transport themselves to the North or South pole. Londoners were able to take their ultimate Christmas selfies to share and celebrate with family and friends wherever they are in the world! The grottos will be open every Saturday in December to spread Christmas cheer right up until the big day.
All those that came along were lucky enough to hear the debut performance of ‘The Twelve Days of Castle Square’ sung by the Elephant and Castle Community Hub Choir. The song, also recently published in the Castle Chronicle, features lots of Castle Square and Ash Avenue businesses who are ready for the festive season.
As well as Christmas carols, a group of local performers created a version of the Christmas Carol Story, set in the Elephant and Castle with characters that represented the diversity of the area. The story showcased some of the community groups in the area which have been working with the Community Hub, such as Upside Down Dance, a teen dance group who performed a popular Christmas song.
If you missed out on the day’s events don’t fear – there’s plenty more festive cheer to go around at Castle Square and the Elephant and Castle Community Hub this Christmas!
