Colombian ballet Star opens festive fun at plaza latina

The streets of Elephant & Castle will come alive with the sights and sounds of Latin America this Christmas, with the hotly anticipated arrival of Plaza Latina. This festive South American inspired Christmas market will light up Nursery Row Park from 12pm-6pm on the 7th, 14th and 21st of December, with an eclectic mix of live music, performances, fresh food and handmade gifts from across the continent.

Plaza Latina will be opened with a magical performance by Colombia’s very own “Billy Elliott”, Fernando Montaño. Having recently performed for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, the world-class ballet dancer will showcase a piece inspired by Southwark native, Charlie Chaplin – a spectacle not to be missed. Visitors will also be treated to a series of workshops which will take place each day, including lessons in dance, theatre, music and piñata-making classes for children.

Plaza Latina is run by the Carnaval del Pueblo Association (CDPA) and sponsored by Delancey, Lend Lease, Southwark High Street Challenge and Southwark Council. The CDPA is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, to help create an understanding and increase public awareness of Latin American cultural heritage. The team are well-recognised in the area as the faces behind the hugely popular ‘Carnaval del Pueblo’, which has been held Southwark for the past 16 years.

Alexandra Baille, Plaza Latina, said: “Plaza Latina is Carnaval del Pueblo's early contribution towards complementing Southwark's regeneration. Our sincere aspiration is for the economic impact of the Latin American cultural heritage of music, dance and food in the creative industries to once again flourish into year round activity and our annual large-scale carnival.”

As well as providing support for the Carnaval del Pueblo Association, Delancey is currently developing significant residential and retail plans in Elephant & Castle to complement the wider regeneration strategy in the area. This includes the Elephant Road site and the redevelopment of the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, which will form the centrepiece of a new town centre destination, with high quality residential, retail, leisure and cultural amenities.
