Construction set to begin on Castle Square

Construction has started on the new, temporary, flexible, affordable retail space at Castle Square on Elephant Road. Once complete, Castle Square will be a new pop-up shopping destination with over 5,000 sq ft of shops and cafes in the centre of Elephant and Castle. It will be the new home for many of the shops and cafes from the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, including Ana Castro, Magic Carpet and Raw Fashion when the shopping centre closes and during the planned redevelopment of the town centre.

Construction on Castle Square is expected to take approximately 5 months to complete, with tenants able to move in when the shopping centre closes in July 2020.

Ana Castro, a tenant at the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre commented on the relocation of her ladies’ clothing store to Castle Square, saying: “I am excited to continue selling to my regular, loyal customers and for welcoming new ones! This is an amazing area and a great opportunity for my business.”

Other traders who will relocate to Castle Square also commented:

“La Bodeguita café is delighted to announce its new location at Castle Square. Come and try our traditional Colombian empanadas and the best Colombian Coffee.”

Forever Hairdressing have said “We are pleased to continue operating in Elephant ad Castle offering hairdressing and beauty services. We welcome you!”

Diana Barranco, Community Director for Elephant and Castle Town Centre commented:

“Castle Square will create a shopping destination at the heart of Elephant and Castle for the local community while the new town centre is being developed. It will become the new home for many popular, established local businesses and we’re delighted that well-known, local traders are looking forward to the next chapter for their businesses at Castle Square.

“The start of construction for a new retail and leisure hub at Castle Square marks a significant milestone in the development of a new town centre for Elephant and Castle. It’s great that we can support independent businesses to remain in the area and maintain the vibrancy of Elephant and Castle.

“All independent tenants in the existing Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre have now been given their notices, this certainty will help all tenants plan for their future and brings the creation of a new town centre for Elephant and Castle a step closer.”

Further information about the closure and redevelopment is expected to be announced in the coming months.
