Shops, restaurants and leisure

The new town centre will include over 170,000 sq ft of new shops and restaurants. This will sit alongside improved leisure facilities, with a provision for a 1,000 seat multi-screen cinema and a 500-audience capacity grass-roots cultural venue. We have also committed to offering 20,000 sq ft of space to a commercial bingo operator, following requests from local people.

We recognise Elephant and Castle’s varied modern culture, and we want to combine the best of old and new together in the future town centre. Key to this is ensuring that local businesses can remain in the area, and we are working with existing businesses from the shopping centre to ensure they are supported whilst these changes take place.

In addition to providing 10% of the new space for shops, cafés and restaurants at affordable rental levels, we have a range of alterative measure in place to support. These include:

  • Providing a relocation fund of over £634,700 to Southwark Council to support the cost of relocation.
  • Appointing an independent business consultant, Tree Shepherd, to advise and assist businesses on business development and support them with planning for the future.
  • Delivering additional space for shops, cafés and restaurants on Castle Square in the interim so that businesses can remain open in clusters within the local area.
  • Securing alternative affordable space for shops, cafés and restaurants in the area – these shops are ready for trading and are reserved specifically for shopping centre businesses.
  • We will be maintaining a database of all available space in the area to enable the businesses to identify future facilities.
  • Looks positive and helpful to understand the details of the proposals. Pleased there will be facilities for leisure.
